This is me using Cool Edit 2000 (an excellent program, sadly no longer with us) to restore the audio from an old cassette tape made (very badly) in 1977 – by me, aged 12! It’s got very stupid stuff on it…
A 1959 Zenith “Extended Stereo” Console is repaired and modified to give pure unprocessed 2-channel sound rather than processed “enhanced” stereo. This is my first effort at vacuum tube audio restoration and it sounds really nice. The video is my entry in the TubeDepot.com Tube Project Video Contest. Please take a look… if you like it please post a rating for the contest before 8/15/09! Thanks, Jeff

This is Dr. Richard Blandau’s classic animation on development of the heart. Dr. Blandau (1911-1998) was renowned for his basic studies of ovulation, fertilization and embryonic development. He made many groundbreaking motion pictures. One of them, “Congenital Malformations of the Heart”, contains this 9 minute animation sequence. The film was made in 1951 at the University of Washington, in collaboration with Dr. Robert Rushmer. The 16mm film was widely used in embryology courses. Well-worn copies of it were subsequently transferred to early videotape; and videotapes in turn have been recopied to digital media. So great is the film’s instructional quality that in spite of severe degradation these twice copied versions are still in use today. It was felt that a high quality digital restoration would be valuable, both for students and teachers of embryology, and as an object lesson in the art of instructional animation. This restored version was made from Dr. Blandau’s personal copy of the film, using the best available film scanning technology. The new sound track uses the same words as the original film. Thanks to the University of Washington Special Collections, for permission to make this restoration available online.

This record at least 96 years old I made few adjustments to lower the Gain on my pre amp in an attempt to lower the distortion in the first recording I took using it. Listen and let me know how it sounds now. This song is a favorite of Professor Bill Edwards and I was happy to own it. Now I can truly enjoy its soul. After many comments about how I hated pre amp and advocated unamplified recording. Now my opinion has changed a good pre amp is essential weather professional build or self made. And its funny how I got the idea to layer the sound and adjust the lows, mids and highs separately and then layer it onto the original unaltered recording. I restore old photographs as a hobby and sometimes I use layers of one photo to restore details and contrast. One night I said to myself cant I apply the same principal to sound. Please comment and maybe Ill put another video explaining the process I developed.
